It turns out I was wrong. I was weak. As we ran along the uneven and worn dirt path, I found myself praying the agility course would be around the next bend. And then I was praying that it wouldn’t be as I had no idea how I’d have any energy to complete it once we came to it, let alone how I was going to make it back to campus afterward. I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to be when I grew up, but a guardsman wasn’t one of them. Not if they ran like this every morning and every night. Everyone else, including Drake, seemed to be enjoying the morning sprint—their strides long and their breath even. I, on the other hand, was huffing and puffing and trying not to pass out. One would think all the nightmares I’ve had, running for my life would prepare me for this. It turns out they did not. Trust me, no one else was more disappointed in this realization than I.

Finally, after what felt like forever but was probably closer to twenty minutes, we came to a clearing. In the front stood twelve-foot tall telephone poles, they had been staggered, requiring runners to weave around them. Past that was a cargo net climb, floating bridge, monkey bars, balance beams, and if I turned my head even further, a rock wall. Just shoot me now.

Caleb tossed water bottles from his backpack to us. I wondered what else the guy had in his bag and how much the sucker weighed. Caleb talked us through the course and then got right back to work. “Tink and Calix, you’re up first. Ready?” he asked.

“Race you,” Calix said to Tink.

“You’re going down,” Tink laughed.

“Three, two, one, go!” Caleb pointed forward, and the two of them took off in a shotgun start.

“I’m not excepting you two to race through it. Just get a feel for the course. Marisa, you go with Drake. I’ll walk Rue through.”

Another group of voices reached us. “Who’s that?” I asked.

Caleb’s cocked his head to the side, listening. “A group of young-bloods. They shouldn’t be in there. I’ll be right back. Marisa, wait and a minute and go ahead.”
